Some still without power after hailstorm

JOBURG - Days after a hailstorm plunged several suburbs into darkness, some residents are still without power.

According to City Power, power had been restored in all affected areas but the utility was aware of customers who were still experiencing no power and technicians were being sent to those that had logged the issue.

“We urge all individual customers that are experiencing loss of power to call our call centre or log a complaint on the website and obtain a reference number so that technicians can be sent out,” the utility said.

The affected areas included Alexandra, Bryanston, Craighall Park, Greenside, Linden, Roosevelt Park, Robin Hills, Robindale, Highlands North, Kew and Observatory.

Following the hailstorm on 20 September, City Power apologised to all affected customers and said it was working “around the clock” utilising additional technicians in a bid to restore supply to customers that remained without power.

Ward 117 councillor Tim Truluck said there were pockets of areas that remained without power today (25 September).

“After the storm there was the initial surge of people who were without power and the bulk of those cases were addressed but the problem is trying to find them all, and in some instances there are people who still have not been visited by City Power technicians,” Truluck explained.

“A lot [of people] have just been sitting and waiting for the technicians to come and restore their power, but in other cases there are those that had been fixed but a short or loose wire results in a little bit of wind or rain causing it to retrip.”

According to Truluck, these faults were the result of an aging power grid.

“The electricity system is so old and it needs to be redone.”

He advised affected residents to log their power outages online rather than contacting the call centre which he claimed was not effective.

“Residents should make a note of the date, time and reference number in order to escalate the matter to the depot,” he said.

Truluck also urged people who were unsuccessful in contacting City Power to seek the assistance of their respective residents’ association in order to escalate power outages to the utility on their behalf.
