Alex hosts lively Heritage Day celebrations

Heritage Day in Alexandra was celebrated befittingly through traditional songs, cultural and modern dances, and speeches.

The event hosted by Bokamoso Youth Development Organisation in partnership with the Gauteng Department of Arts and Culture was held at the sports ground next to Madala hostel.

Louis Baloyi of the department said the event honoured the country’s multiple heritages and was a platform to unite citizens in their diversity. He added that it also provided the department an opportunity to identify cultural performing talent for selection to perform at the Soweto Cultural Festival on 27 September.

“The festival is an annual event to try preserve and promote cultural heritage education. The first prize winners will receive R8 000, runners up will receive R5 000 and the third group will receive R3 000,” he said.

Baloyi thanked the organisers stressing that the participation of all age groups was an opportunity for residents to exchange knowledge and draw inspiration from each other’s diverse backgrounds. “The physical activities also contribute to healthy lifestyles and keep the youth occupied and away from negative influences like alcohol, drugs and sexual activities,” he added

Kagiso Mbele of the department said the event gave the youths an opportunity to learn their roots and to get inspired by knowing their identity. He said most cultural songs conveyed value-laden messages which helped and guided society.

“The messages also inspire discipline and respect which are essential for the youths who are exposed to many social challenges and negative influences daily,” he said. “Exposure to their culture will help them know their identity, how to care for themselves and to develop the capacity to resist negative influences.”
