Sandringham police nab Alex hijackers

ALEXANDRA - Alex police are working round the clock to track down two armed suspects who allegedly hijacked a woman driver at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Street and 13th Avenue.

Sandringham police have arrested two suspects believed to have been involved in the hijacking of a woman motorist at the corner of Vincent Tshabalala Street and 13th Avenue on 16 September.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the Sandringham detectives were investigating the hijacking of a Kia motor vehicle on 12 September when they received a tip-off about the hideout of the suspects in 15th Avenue, Alexandra.

When they arrived at the house in 15th Avenue, they found the two suspects in possession of two toy guns and the keys to the Kia vehicle which they had abandoned.

A SANDRINGHAM detective with one of the two suspects arrested in 15th Avenue, Alexandra, shows-off the toy guns allegedly found in their possession.

Maphakela said the two suspects have been linked to the hijacking of a 32-year-old woman from Glenvista who was driving along Vincent Tshabalala Road in the direction of Sandton when she stopped at traffic lights on 13th Avenue.

She was approached by two men, one who pointed a firearm at her. One of the suspects managed to open the driver’s door of the car and pushed the woman into the passenger seat. The suspect then allegedly unlocked the passenger door for his colleague, who pulled the woman out of her Polo Vivo car before speeding off.

The victim, who said she was not familiar with Alexandra, was helped by two women who took her to the Alexandra Police Station where she opened a case. In the car was a cellphone worth R6 000, a laptop worth R8 000, and bank cards and cash.

The two suspects, who will appear in the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, have also been linked to 13 other cases of hijacking’s and street robberies in Alexandra and the Sandringham area.
