Adapt hopes dialogues can forge family unity

ALEXANDRA - Agisanang Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training (Adapt) hopes to forge family unity through its Heritage Day Family Indaba Dialogue on 27 September.

AGISANANG Domestic Abuse Prevention and Training (Adapt) hopes to forge family unity through its Heritage Day Family Indaba Dialogue on 27 September.

The Section 21 non-profit organisation which set up in Alexandra in 1994, will hold the dialogue at the community hall of the Alexandra Police Station in 15th Avenue, starting at 9am. Due to escalating incidents of women and child abuse in Alex, Martina Monyamane, a Criminal Justice System department co-ordinator of Adapt, said she hopes this kind of dialogue can help forge unity within the family unit as both parties will be given the opportunity to voice their concerns in the hope that they may find each other during this process.

She said parents were complaining about the behaviour of their children at home, and children complain that their parents were infringing on their rights. “We therefore invited families (parents and children from the age of 12) to come forward and raise their problems as far as their relationship is concerned.”

Criminal Justice System is a department of Adapt which is committed to preventing violence against women and children, working in collaboration with men as part of the solution to eliminate gender-based violence.

It monitors court proceeding and ensures fair, prompt and gender sensitive handling of legal proceedings and aims to eradicate secondary victimisation by providing court accompaniment, picketing and giving legal and moral support to victims and survivors of gender-based violence.

“Our programme encourages victims of gender-based violence to come forward so that justice can take its course and also encourages active participation of all member of the community.

“We also do lobbying and advocacy to change the social values that perpetuate violence against women and also promote the spirit of interdependence, mutual respect and co-existence

between women and men,” she added.

Adapt has partnered with Ward 105 councillor Joyce Ngwenya in hosting the Family Indaba Dialogue as part of Heritage Day celebrations. The purpose of this event is to strengthen family units.

It follows the recommendation by several stakeholders who attended the previous workshops on the prevention of gender-based violence, that all family members should attend in order to come up with a solution, since it has become clear that there is a lot of confusion and misunderstanding on the application of human rights.
