Murder up in crime stats

SOUTH AFRICA – Murder and aggravated robbery has increased in the period 2013/2014.

This was revealed by Minister of Police, Nkosinathi Nhleko at the 2013/14 Crime Stats briefing in Pretoria on 19 September. Nhleko said there was a decrease in sexual offences, stock theft and commercial crime.

Nhleko said the crimes reported consisted of 20 categories.

National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega announced the statistics.

Property related crimes (including housebreaking, residential and other premises, theft of vehicle or motorcycle or out of motor vehicle and stock theft) decreased by 0.2 percent in 2013/14.

Nhleko said engagement on crime was needed in order to activate society to become part of the fight against crime and corruption. Added to this, he wanted to see an improvement in police services at police stations.
