Alex FM is buzzing with excitement and anticipation after two significant developments.
One is the recent acquisition of spacious premises in Yarona Building on 3rd Street, Wynberg, and the other is the appointment of seasoned radio personality Segale Mogotsi as head of the station.
Mogotsi is a household brand from his time at Radio Bop, Khaya FM, SABC's Metro FM, Motsweding and also the recording industry. He has been in media for more than 30 years. Some well-known radio personalities including Bob Mabhena and the late Kabzela learnt the trade from him.
Mogotsi knows Alexandra well. “I am tuned to Alex's challenges,” he said in reference to his role in the station's strategic repositioning years ago. His appointment could be a second coming to complete unfinished business.
Hesitant at first to grant an interview, Mogotsi said the ingredients for the station's success were in abundance through its permanent and voluntary staff members. He thanked his predecessor Trinity Mohlamme for doing the groundwork and the board for availing him the opportunity to do what he knows best – entertaining the public with good content programming in news, education and entertainment.
He is still keeping his plans close to his chest as he goes through staff consultations and oversees strategic planning processes where the vision will be clarified to all staff to affirm a collective mandate.
Meanwhile, he has started implementing his duties through gradual relocation to the new premises and restructuring programmes to 13 news bulletins from the initial nine, and in more languages.
His main concern is keeping a balance between staff commitment and satisfaction given the limited resources. “My keen interest is to impart skills to volunteers in appreciation of their effort, and for their back-up when they look elsewhere for permanent employment,” he concluded.
