Officers jailed for sex and bribery

ALEXANDRA - Two police officers sentenced by a magistrate this week for a sexually related corruption and bribe case will exchange their service badges for prison garb for five years.

Two police officers sentenced at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court this week for a sexually-related corruption and bribe case will exchange their service badges for prison garb for five years.

Sentencing the two officers of the Boksburg North Crime Prevention unit on the strength of CCTV evidence, presiding magistrate Syta Prinsloo said they “were not worthy wearing the police uniform”.

Their crime committed last year involved a businessman Thomas Haasbroek who turned state witness. Haasbroek paid them a bribe of R550 after being stopped for drunk driving, and also one of the officers conducted a hand job on Haasbroek.

Footage was said to have shown the guilty officers, Constable Alva Kgomo (33) conducting the hand job, with Sergeant Ernst Dlomo (41) accepting the bribe outside their police vehicle.

The court prosecutor involved in the case, Percy Ramushu said the sentencing was fair given mitigating circumstances, and any change in the duration of their sentence will depend on the Department of Correctional Services.
