ALEXANDRA - A hawker helped himself to police equipment and fake DVDs from the boot of a patrol car which had been confiscated by the police from his friend.

A HAWKER helped himself to police equipment and fake DVDs from the boot of a patrol car which had been confiscated from his friend by the police.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said Metro police officers had just arrested a man who was selling fake DVDs and other good on the streets. As the officers were handcuffing the man, a friend of his came and tried to intervene.

He grappled with the police after failing to negotiate the release of his friend.

When all else failed, the man is said to have walked away and gone straight to a police patrol vehicle parked on the side of the road. He is alleged to have opened the boot of the car and helped himself to his friend’s fake DVDs and other items which had been confiscated, including police equipment such as reflector jackets, rain suits, bunny jackets and other items.

When the police noticed him, he fled the scene with the goods and equipment. As they gave chase to the boot looter, they let go of the other man who also fled the scene. The police managed to arrest the boot looter.

He was detained at the Alexandra Police Station, awaiting his appearance at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court on charges of theft from a motor vehicle and defeating the ends of justice.
