Metro police and the South African Police Services including the flying squad, the mounted horse unit and accident recovery unit were out in full force recently at a roadblock in Alexandra between 20th and 22nd avenues along Vincent Tshabalala Road.

They checked vehicles for roadworthiness, registration and for drivers’ licences. However, they dealt speedily with each vehicle, and those with no transgressions passed on within minutes.

But those with offences were pulled over and issued with tickets. Motorists trying to make u-turns were quickly directed back to the roadblock by police stationed a distance from the inspection point. Speaking on condition of anonymity in the absence of official spokespersons, an officer said the exercise was the beginning of more to come as the nation approaches the festive season. Many fatalities reportedly result mainly from defective vehicles, sublicensed drivers and drunken driving. He warned motorists to get their car in good condition for their safety and for other motorists and their passengers.

Police spokespersons could be reached for comment by the time of publication.
