Moboweni said she was outside washing clothes when the baby cried, but couldn’t find any rats or signs of an intruder. She rushed her daughter to Masakane clinic on 1st Avenue, Alexandra, but was was turned away for unexplained reasons. She then bought medication at a shop which dried the wounds and also rat poison. Mboweni said most times the rats emerged in the evening in large numbers in the streets, but when it was quiet they foraged openly around the shacks. “They are huge, frightening and could have killed my daughter if she hadn’t cried.” She added that many children and the bedridden have been attacked. by rats.

City council has for years been concerned about the rat infestation in Alexandra and has tried various methods to exterminate them including using owls stationed at schools, but with little success.
