Carter Primary School forges ahead in IT

ALEXANDRA - Primary schools in Alexandra are joining their counterparts in suburban areas to introduce e-learning which involves the use of information communication technology for teaching and learning.

Primary schools in Alexandra are joining their counterparts in suburban areas to introduce e-learning which is computer-based technology for teaching and learning.

If all goes well, this will boost the provincial Department of Education’s plan to have paperless schools in the near future.

Gauteng Minister of Education, Panyaza Lesufi, has said the use of technology in all walks of life was irreversible and should also be used to advance education in poor schools. Most schools in affluent areas already rely on computers to conduct lessons for research and examinations, but this is still to happen on a large scale in township schools.

Lesufi insisted that these schools should not be left behind in technological advancement so that the children are able to fit in a society that is rapidly becoming technology based.

Secondary schools in townships received computers through Gauteng Online some years ago. Now some primary schools are also installing computers, and Carter Primary is taking the lead in Alexandra.

It has received 40 laptops from the education department and an additional 40 through a partnership with non-profit organisation Tomorrow Trust which supports the education of orphaned and vulnerable children.

Acting principal, Ben Masupa said the school was already way ahead in IT-based teaching through a programme adapted for intermediate to senior level maths and English.

“Teachers have been trained in computer use, and four classes of 40 pupils each in Grade 4 and 7 attend hourly sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays,” he said.

Johannes Malebana of the Trust, said children who attended the programme were tested, and most of them had improved their performance in the two subjects.

“We look forward to a longer relationship with this school and to see the programme introduced for all the grades in line with the department’s plan,” he concluded.
