Women seek real power

ALEXANDRA - August is celebrated as women’s month to remind citizens of the women’s struggles and their contributions to the freedom and democracy which all enjoy today.

August is celebrated as Women’s Month to remind citizens of women’s struggles and their contributions to the freedom and democracy which all enjoy today.

Despite the ongoing challenges for many, some women say the attainment of freedom was a foundation for the next phase of struggle – for economic freedom.

Narrating the new struggle, Yvonne Lefakane, administrative manager of the Alexandra Clinic, said women have gone beyond struggling for an identity and equality but to affirm themselves through deeds, which include access to the levers of the economy.

“Women are now taking their rightful place alongside men in accessing power as a legislative imperative so that they will get more involved in the economy.”

She said some women are now in decision-making structures of government where they take part in policy making and representing citizens from local to international levels. There are 20 male ministers and 15 female ministers, along with 20 male deputy ministers and 17 female deputy ministers. “These female ministers and deputies and others in Parliament… formulate policies which guide the changes taking place in all walks of life for everyone,” she said.

Lefakane added that though they are still not in the majority, some of them were effectively changing the structure and ownership patterns of the economy from white male domination – and in some instances black male domination.

This she said in reference to Daphne Mashile-Nkosi, who owns a business in manganese mining, as well as Brigette Hadebe, who owns gold, platinum and coal mines.

Lefakane said these women’s roles in the economy inspired their younger counterparts.

Lefakane urged men to assist these changes by adjusting their attitudes to the reality of equality.

“There should be more ongoing education and celebrations to continue reminding society that the changes taking place are real and are opportunities which women should take, without having to seek affirmation from our men,” she concluded.
