A teenage boy has praised his mother for bringing him up single handedly despite the family’s hardships.

This befitting praise during Women’s Month was given by Thami Makhoi (17) an aspiring footballer who also wants to be an accountant.

Makhoi, a Grade 10 pupil at Alexandra High School said his mother Ester Makhoi had dedicated all her time and resources to ensure that he and his siblings have shelter, clothing, food, went to school and had a lap to cry on daily.

“Things have been hard but I commend, idolise and thank her for the resilience and for bringing us up alone despite our daily struggle for survival,” he said. “Her love and compassion for us and also other people are traits that keep her going, and which I hope to inherit,” he said.

Makhoi added that he took his school work seriously, and loved accounting and commerce as he wanted to be an accountant so that he could help his mother and siblings lead better lives.

He said he would love to meet his father provided that he would contribute meaningfully to family unity, and to alleviate the struggle his mother had endured. “Its important to have a nuclear family, but on condition that both parents are helpful to each other,” he added.

Makhoi also loves soccer and plays for TDS Football Club in the Alex lower division. He said the team had a fair chance of promotion to the Castle League and dreamt of playing at a professional level to provide a better income for his family.
