One of five suspected robbers was apprehended by Metro police after a brief chase.

Alex police have reportedly launched a massive manhunt for the other four men who managed to outrun the Metro police officers and escaped.

Spokesperson for the Alexandra Police Station, Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said they were following good leads and were confident the four suspects would be put behind bars soon.

The men are said to have approached three Somali nationals on 19th Avenue. One of them, who was brandishing what turned out to be a toy gun, allegedly held up the complainants and asked them to raise their hands while his accomplices searched the victims.

They took two cellphones and R1 200 in cash. Maphakela said while the suspects were searching the men, one of the victims managed to escape and flagged down a patrolling Metro police vehicle. The officers gave chase and managed to apprehend the suspect who was holding the gun.

Maphakela said when the Metro officers examined the firearm they discovered that it was a toy gun. The suspect has been detained at the Alexandra Police Station and will be appearing soon at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court to face a charge of armed robbery with a toy gun.
