Brave woman catches trickster after handbag snatch

ALEXANDRA - A brave woman caught a trickster after her partners crime had bolted away with her handbag full of her valuables.

A brave woman caught an elderly trickster after her partners in crime bolted away with her handbag full of her valuables.

According to police, the complainant, a Midrand resident, had accompanied her cousin to Alex. Her cousin decided to use a street loo on the corner of 8th Avenue and Josias Madzunya Street. While waiting for her cousin, an elderly woman came and deliberately stepped on her foot and stood there.

When she tried to make her aware of the fact that she was stepping on her, two other women joined. She then realised something was amiss and screamed for help. A fourth woman then arrived and grabbed her handbag and they all started bolting away.

As they ran off with her handbag, the complainant managed to grab hold of the elderly woman who had stepped on her foot and the victim’s cousin quickly came to her aid.

They then marched the elderly suspect to the addresses of her “friends in crime” but did not find them.

The complainant and her cousin then walked the woman to the police station, where she was detained on allegations of common robbery. She is expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court soon.

Inside her handbag were her cellphone, R200 in cash and bank cards. Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said they were still hunting for the other three suspects.
