Alex football club thanks supporters

Alexandra United Football Club will forever be grateful for the support the team continues to enjoy from its home base.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Alexandra and also express the team’s gratitude,” said United chairman Nkani Dube during a wide-ranging interview with Alex News.

Dube said the people of Alexandra had supported the club through thick and thin and for that they would be forever indebted.

The chairman said he was well aware of the role played by supporters in any club, and described them as the backbone of the team.

“Without you and your support, we are nothing. A team exists and grows to become a leading brand purely because of its support base,” he said.

Dube also said the club was greatly indebted to its former coach and son of Alexandra, John Shoes Moshoeu, whom he said had laid the foundation of the success the team enjoyed in the past season, despite being pipped at the last minute for a spot in the promotional play-offs by rivals Highlands Park.

“Shoes has done wonders for us, both on and off the field. He used to pump out his own personal money to transport the players from match to match, buy them food, and ensured they were well taken care of. It was unfortunate we did not finish his dream of taking this team to the national First Division.

“Whenever that happens, we shall remember Shoes and dedicate our achievements to him. The dream lives on as we go back to the drawing board to assess our strengths and weaknesses, and then map a way forward to achieve the dream Shoes had always wanted,” Dube said.

He also thanked the Alexandra Football Association for all it had done for the team; and the management of Balfour Park Stadium for “carrying the team on their backs and offering us a home away from home while our own stadium [Alexandra Stadium] is undergoing renovations”.
