Alex unveils its legends

ALEXANDRA - Alexandra residents and institutions are affirming their right to tell their own story and history before others can narrate it to the world.

ALEXANDRA residents and institutions are asserting their right to tell their own history before others can narrate it to the world.

This was a theme at an event called Alexandra Legends Inspire Campaign held at the Alexandra FM radio station recently. The campaign is also an extension of the centenary celebration of Alexandra held two years ago, and unveiled the history and notable events which made the township what it is today.

Bongani Mandita, chairperson of the organising committee said, “Besides telling our own story, we want to ignite our children’s interest to know their predecessors who went on to shape this country’s history, before they are narrated by others with limited knowledge of our history. “This will also encourage them to take pride in who they are and inspire them to emulate those before them, [because they are] worthy role models to follow.”

Mandita added that the campaign could be an annual event to ensure that all prominent figures are honoured. The legends will be drawn from all walks of such as community development, education, science and technology, sports, politics, civic movements, and arts and music. Their selection would be done in consultation with their families who will verify the information to ensure it was accurate.

The honouring will be conducted in groups of 20. The first group was announced at the event with the deceased’s nomination accepted by their families. They are Harry Makubire, Hugh Masakela, General Mandita, Peggy Chauke, Don Ncube, Majorie Manganyi, Judge Brian Mashile, Wally Serote, Vincent Tshabalala, Leepile Taunyana, Irvin Khoza, Shakes Kungwane and Brian Baloyi. Mandita said the remaining seven will be announced after they have confirmed acceptance.

The next stage of the campaign will be a fund-raiser golf challenge on 30 September at the Kensington Golf Club. Some legendary golfers from Alex will participate and use the occasion to share their experience of succeeding in the game during the difficult times of apartheid.

The main event of the campaign will be on 22 November where the nominated legends will be awarded medals and commendations. Mandita said the community will be included in the process by expressing their views on the legends via SMS and other means.
