CBD traffic disruptions expected due to march

JOBURG - Traffic disruptions are expected in the Joburg inner city on 17 July as about 200 striking parking attendants are expected to take to the street.

Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said about 200 parking attendants were expected to march to the offices of their employers to hand over a memorandum.

According to Minnaar, the march was expected to begin at 11am and end just after midday.

Jourbert, De Korte, Simmonds, Stiemens and Melle streets would be affected during this time, he said.

The inner city parking attendants, represented by the Kungwini Amalgamate Union Workers (KUWU), had been on strike since last week demanding a basic salary.

The union proposed a basic salary of R5 000 per month and a 30 percent commission on monies made per month.

Another demands included that workers must be registered to the provident fund and a permanent contract of employment be introduced replacing the monthly contract, which workers were on.

Further, the union demanded that the money which was deducted from the attendants’ commission since January to date to recoup lost income must be reimbursed.

The union’s general secretary, Khumbulani Moyo said its members planned to intensify their strike action by marching to the head office of ACE Parking Services on 17 July to handover a memorandum.
