Thieves who broke into the offices and classrooms of Alexandra High School got away empty-handed after being disturbed by the resident caretaker.

The caretaker heard noise in the early hours of the morning and asked one of the school patrollers to accompany him to check it out.

When they approached the scene they heard people running away. They followed in the direction of where the footsteps were going and discovered some clothes, jackets, jerseys and shoes strewn all over the grounds of the school. There were boxes full of CDs and DVDs also left on the ground.

Inside the building, they discovered several windows had been smashed to gain entry into the classrooms and offices. Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the suspects were unknown at this stage and that police were still investigating a case of malicious damage to property, burglary and attempted theft.
