Police have reported that a 52-year-old man was savagely beaten up and was stabbed in his eye by another man in a tavern following an argument over spilled beer.

Alex police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the victim from 11th Avenue bumped a table at Mandiwane’s Tavern and toppled over a beer bottle. The victim then offered to buy the drinker another beer but he would not take it.

The unknown drinker insisted he wanted his original beer and then shoved and pushed the victim and ordered him to go outside. Outside, the man grabbed the victim by the scruff of the neck and banged his head several times against the wall and a burglar gate.

Maphakela said the attack continued for a few minutes before the man, who is now a suspect in a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, produced a sharp instrument and pierced the victim’s left eye.

Police said they were still hunting for the unknown suspect and appealed to anyone who witnessed the fight and happens to know the suspect, to come forward and assist police in their efforts to track him down.
