Diplomats partner with Alex NGOs

ALEXANDRA - Foreign diplomats descended on Alexandra recently to consolidate on an evolving relationship with children's organisations.

Foreign diplomats descended on Alexandra to consolidate on an evolving relationship with children’s organisations.

The ambassadors and high commissioners, mostly women, expressed appreciation of the work done by two organisations they visited – Ratang Bana in Eastbank and Leratong Joy for One Foundation to which they also issued certificates of commendation.

They were led by dean of ambassadors in SA, Bene M’poko and also accompanied by representatives of the departments of international relations and co-operation, social development, City of Joburg and local businesspersons. The diplomats committed to visit the organisations annually to ensure they were adequately resourced and continuously improved the quality of their services.

Ingrid Moloi of Ratang Bana said her organisations supported 361 child-headed households and 64 grannies. It operated from well-equipped facilities that had computers, kitchen equipment, air conditioning system and an integrated vegetable tunnel system donated by the delegates. “The tunnel will enhance our self sufficiency in food production,” she said.

Her counterpart at Lerato Joy for One, Peggy Chauke also thanked the delegation for donating kitchen and office equipment, bedding items, and their commitment to a longer term partnership. The organisation which started 20 years ago supports six to 18-year-old children – 20 with shelter, 41 child-headed households and 170 with early childhood development.

Chauke said most of the children were rescued from abusive homes and were impacted by HIV/Aids. The organisation provides them with medical care through a partnership with the Alexandra clinic, a homely environment with parental care for their emotional wellness, early childhood development and stimulation to help them grow into normal children.

“We keep them here until they develop to be able to care for themselves. One of them is now a fashion designer in England and occasionally sends clothes to the others,” added Chauke.

Matheko Badana, director in the department of international relations praised the diplomats’ support. “Their contribution helps bridge the gap in inequality, unemployment and alleviates poverty,” said Badana. “Its a true reflection of their understanding and commitment to the ubuntu principle where children’s welfare, security and development are everyone’s responsibility regardless of origin.”
