JOBURG - Mother nature appears to have granted Joburg a brief respite from this week's chills, so take advantage of the sunshine this weekend.

Saturday, 24 May

Enjoy a day of all things German at the Deutsche Internationale Schule Johannesburg’s annual basar.

Featuring performances by CrashCarBurn and the Graeme Watkins Project, the basar will boast a fine selection of local and imported beers, German food and specialities, fun and games, arts and crafts, and more.

The basar will take place at the school, 11 Sans Souci Road, Parktown, from 10am.

Disney’s My Son Pinocchio Jr, a stage adaptation of the award-winning musical, will tell this beloved story from the perspective of toy maker Geppetto.

Two performances will take place at the People’s Theatre at the Joburg Theatre complex, Loveday Street, Braamfontein, at 10.30am and at 2.30pm.

Combine history and music with the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation’s Music in the Music Room – The Lewandowski Chorale at Arcadia.

The chorale is a group of musicians dedicated to the revival of classical Jewish liturgical music in its original, unarranged form.

“After a short tour of this magnificent mansion, we will be treated to a recital by the chorale,” said the foundation’s Flo Bird.

The tour will begin at Villa Arcadia (Hollard Insurance), Oxford Road, Parktown, at 5pm.

If controversial comedy floats your boat, join John Vlismas for Revelations: Sacred Cow Apocalypse.

The stand-up show will include a live band, spoof news reports, and a solo roast of President Jacob Zuma.

Revelations: Sacred Cow Apocalypse will take place at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City, Gold Reef City Casino, Northern Park Way, Johannesburg South, at 8pm.

In the spirit of celebrations taking place this year, the Bassline Africa Day concert is also celebrating its 10-year anniversary.

Featuring renowned South African artists such as Vusi Mahlasela and Admiral and Jah Seed, the annual Africa Day concert is set to rock Newtown and will take place at the Bassline, 10 Henry Nxumalo Street, Newtown, from 9pm.

Sunday, 25 May

Explore the great outdoors in the heart of the city with a three-koppie hike, which will begin at Melville Koppies Central at 8.30am.

This hike will take in the geology, archaeology, history, and flora and fauna of the reserve.

Enjoy a matinee performance of Zakes Mda’s must-see corruption satire, The Mother of All Eating, at the Market Theatre.

Directed by Makhaola Siyanda Ndebele, the play features actors Mpho Osei-Tutu and Jerry Mntonga, accompanied by Bernett Mulungo on the piano.

The performance will begin at 3.15pm at the theatre, 56 Margaret Mcingana Street, Newtown.

If cinema’s more your thing, independent cinema The Bioscope will offer screenings of The Good Man.

The film tells the story of Michael (Aidan Gillen), a young, upwardly mobile Irishman with a wife and daughter he loves, good friends, and a promising career; and Sifiso, a bright, sharp teenager in an informal settlement in Cape Town.

Screenings will take place at The Bioscope, 286 Fox Street, Maboneng Precinct, City and Suburban, on 24 May at 6pm and 8pm, and on 25 May at 5pm and 7pm.
