Pupils urged to design winning lamp

JOBURG - High school pupils in Alexandra are among their Gauteng counterparts who have been urged to join the rush and design the energy efficient winning lamp.

High school pupils in Alexandra are among their Gauteng counterparts who have been urged to join the rush and design an energy-efficient winning lamp.

The closing date for Eskom’s 2014 Energy Efficient Lighting Design Competition entries is 15 August. Architects, interior designers, engineers, electrical contractors, consultants, lighting specialists, students and high school pupils – in fact, anyone with a passion for design and/or efficient lighting – are invited to enter this competition with a prize totalling R200 000.

As part of the celebration of 20 years of democracy, the Gauteng Department of Education has joined hands with Eskom to support this exciting competition by including it in the curriculum of secondary schools in the province.

Through this endorsement, the department will reach 83 schools which specifically focus on electrical technology, as well as the remainder of the 832 schools on their database to reach all students in the province from grade 10-12.

Over 90 percent of the schools in the district are in rural areas and townships, and previously disadvantaged learners will now have the opportunity to be exposed to the competition and the field of energy efficiency.

Another exciting new feature of the competition, and a direct result of the Education Department’s involvement and endorsement, is the assistance to pupils who visit the Sci-Bono centre in Newtown, Johannesburg from 26 to 30 May.

Pupils visiting the centre will have the opportunity to attend presentations about the competition and receive first-hand information and examples on how to design an energy-efficient lamp. In addition to this, Eurolux will be making energy-efficient light bulbs available to learners free of charge.

A briefing session will be held on 26 May followed by an interactive workshop on 28 and 29 May 2014. During these workshops, energy-efficient lighting design experts, energy-efficient lighting technology sponsors and students from Greenside Design Centre will interact, mentor and workshop with pupils.
