Johnny Clegg and Henley offering music scholarships

Henley Business School and artist Johnny Clegg have collaborated to offer a scholarship in MBA.

One of South Africa’s most revered artists, Johnny Clegg, has teamed up with the Henley Business School to offer a deserving student a music scholarship.

The scholarship, titled the Johnny Clegg scholarship, will be awarded to a deserving applicant to study towards an MBA in Music and Creative Industries. The applicant has to indicate an interest in the creative industries and must have an understanding of the critical intersection of creativity and business aspects of the industry.

According to Dean Jon Foster-Pedley of the Henley Business School, the institution is excited to be working with a revered artist such as Clegg on this scholarship.

“As an artist, his story speaks directly to the principles of this MBA; he has harnessed his innate creativity as an artist and has applied sound business principles to ensure that his art reaches audiences the world over,” he added.

Johnny Clegg described the scholarship as being significant because in the music industry, information is power; something he learnt during his 30 years in the industry.

“I’m excited to be part of empowering artists through this scholarship, and working with Henley to share this opportunity with the right candidate,” Clegg added.

Foster-Pedley praised the MBA course, citing it as the first of its kind and a timely initiative that offered creative workers and arts practitioners a tailor-made business qualification.

“We’re looking forward to offering this scholarship to a creative individual in partnership with one of South Africa’s most inspiring artists, Johnny Clegg,” Foster-Pedley said.

The scholarship on offer will cover the full tuition fee of R220 000 for the MBA programme and comprises of Henley’s core MBA course, with the music and creative industry sector section allocating additional time to contextualise and discuss industry-specific issues.

Interested candidates can apply directly to the business school by visiting the Henley website www.Henleysa.ac.za where application forms are available. Successful candidates will be selected based on Henley’s criteria, and the final decision will be made jointly by Johnny Clegg and the Henley Business School.
