A jilted lover was so angry with his former girlfriend that he set her shack on fire.

The victim who lives in Wynberg said she had been on her way to visit a friend when she came across her former boyfriend who then questioned her about their relationship. When she told him there was no relationship between them anymore, the suspect was said to have been infuriated.

He allegedly tried to strangle her but she broke free and ran off. The suspect was said to have warned his former girlfriend that he would burn down her shack. A few hours later the woman received a call from her neighbours who said her shack was on fire.

She rushed back and tried to put out the fire using buckets of water but the flames were too strong. She said her double bed, R1 500 in cash, her matric certificate, ID book and clothes to the value of R3 000 all perished in the fire.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the police were still looking for the suspect in connection with a case of arson.
