Foreign language fun

JOBURG - Rhona Wetzka believes that talking to people in a foreign language is a way to travel – without actually going anywhere.

She founded Lingo Links, a Johannesburg-based foreign language group which allows people who speak different languages to socialise. A new Midrand-based group is also on the horizon.

“In Midrand Daphne Ferreira would like to start a German group and Kathy Molloy a French evening group,” said Wetzka.

She explained Lingo Links consists of small, friendly groups that meet in members’ homes or coffee shops to socialise in different languages. “Each group is unique with its own ambiance and way of operating. Meetings are held weekly or fortnightly at a time and place suitable to the participants. The only requirement for joining is a knowledge of a foreign language.”

“Join our magic pastime and bring a whole new dimension to your lives. It’s a wonderful opportunity to brush up on an acquired language, complement studies or revamp a rusty mother tongue in an exciting and natural way,” said Wetzka.

She said mother tongue speakers form the backbone of Lingo Links. In her experience, these are mostly people who have newly immigrated to the country and are looking to meet new people.

“To newcomers Lingo Links is an informative and social life-line, while our senior members not only enjoy speaking their old lingo again, but our meetings are a wonderful new highlight in their lives. The newfound interest, mental stimulation and appreciation of their linguistic skills gives them a sense of self-worth and fulfilment,” said Wetzka.

The club has groups for all major European and African languages as well as Chinese and Japanese. She also encouraged more people to start groups in their areas.

“It only takes two to start practising and lay the foundations,” she said. She encouraged community members to visit the Lingo Links website for tips.
