Alex comes to a standstill

ALEXANDRA - The township came to a stand still yesterday during the Eskom load-shedding programme.

Alexandra came to a standstill on 6 March due to Eskom’s load shedding.

All sectors were affected including petrol pump stations, schools and clinics. Most affected were schools in the township which run feeding schemes and cook on school premises for the children.

A woman running a feeding scheme at Emfundisweni Primary School, who preferred to remain anonymous, said they could not cook all day.

“We could not prepare and cook the meals for the children as there was no power,” she said. “We had to make plans to buy some rolls and cold meat and gave those to the children as they would have gone hungry all day.”

Another woman, who did not want to be named, said they too had to rush and buy some rolls for the pupils of nearby Pholosho Junior Secondary School.

School principals spoken to refused to comment on the effects of load shedding, referring all inquiries to the Gauteng Department of Education.

A teacher who preferred to remain anonymous said, “It was hard to teach as some classrooms were too dark for lessons. We had no choice but to do the best we can under the circumstances. We could not send the children home because a day lost is a day late in our syllabus.

“Teaching is a rush to complete the syllabus and losing days or hours has a ripple effect on our race to complete the syllabus.”
