Baby dumper denied bail

ALEXANDRA - Alleged Alexandra baby dumper arrested in Springs has been denied bail after appearing in the Alexandra Magistrate's Court.

The woman, who dumped her newborn baby girl on a street in Marlboro was arrested in Springs following a tip-off. Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said the 18-year-old woman who has admitted to abandoning the child had been denied bail as she had no fixed address.

The child is reported to be doing well and is being kept at a place of safety. The mother’s case will be heard on 25 February at the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Maphakela urged the public to react more quickly in reporting any criminal activities, especially domestic abuse.

Maphakela called on the community to work closely with the police and Community Policing Forum in dealing with cases of substance abuse which was rife in the area. This occurred mainly on weekends when the 18 to 30 year olds in particular have a lot of disposable income. Other commonly reported cases on weekends were grievous bodily harm, common assaults, stabbings and use of foul language resulting from binge drinking.
