Report abuse, MEC urges men

GAUTENG - Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko has urged men to freely report incidents of abuse.

A green door opens for abused men.

At the opening of a safe house for abused women, the Gauteng MEC for Community Safety Faith Mazibuko has called on men to report incidents of abuse from their female spouses.

Victims of domestic violence and sexual offences who reside more than 10km away from a police station often find it difficult to report incidents of abuse immediately. Most of them even suffered secondary victimisation when travelling to a nearest police station, she said.

“It is worrying that men continue to suffer abuse and do not go and report it,” added Mazibuko.

“With the opening of this green door [safe house] men must understand that they can come for counselling. The majority of men complain of being turned into a laughing stock when reporting cases of abuse at their local police station. A safe house works differently in which it is a channel allowing you to start a new life.”

The safe house was donated by Pastor Moswang Nkuna of Randfontein.

Alex News has reported numerous cases of men being abused by their spouses in Alexandra.
