Cops and hijackers in shootout

ALEXANDRA - Police in Alexandra are looking for two men in connection with the hijacking of a maroon Chervrolet Captiva.

According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela police received a tip-off on 18 February about a suspicious car parked outside Block 2 flats in 5th Avenue. Police went to inspect the car and found it had the registration plates of a Toyota Hilux.

When tested against the vehicle register it indicated the vehicle had been hijacked in Wierdabrug in November last year. As the police lay in wait for possible activity on the car, a gold Toyota Corolla arrived with two men.

They went to the Captiva and took some items from it. They went back to their car and as they tried to drive off the police flagged them down to stop. They then started firing at the police and drove off at high speed. A chase followed and the Corolla was found abandoned in 15th Avenue.

Police discovered inside the Corolla a digital camera, an iPad and Zimbabwean money. Both cars have since been pounded and the police are on the hunt for the two men.
