Brave woman fights back hijackers

ALEXANDRA - Police have issued a warning to motorists to always drive with their windows closed, especially in the vicinity of the Marlboro Gautrain Station.

This follows numerous incidents of robbery and car hijackings in the area.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said an organised gang of thugs is harassing motorists in the Eastbank and Far Eastbank areas.

“We understand that it’s summer and very hot, and some cars are without air conditioners hence the need to open windows, but for your own safety, try to avoid driving around with wide open windows – especially when you stop at intersections.”

A 23-year-old Benoni woman driving in the area was approached by a man in his early 20s when she stopped at the traffic lights on Lenin Road next to the Gautrain station. Without saying anything, he attempted to remove her car keys from the ignition but the brave woman fought back.

He then pointed a firearm at her and she “dared him to shoot” her. A struggle ensued but the man eventually managed to grab the keys and unlocked the car doors. Two other men joined him and they tried to grab hold of her handbag.

As they struggled for the bag, one of the three men bit her finger and they managed to pull her out of the car and drove off. A motorist who witnessed the incident flagged down a passing police car which then gave chase. The suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot.

Police are still investigating and no arrests had been made.
