Education committee matrics sparkle

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Education Committee has announced its matric achievements for the Class of 2013.

Two outstanding matric pupils of the Alexandra Education Committee, Bathabisile Nkosi and Vuyo Maraxaba, have been offered Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Scholarships to respectively study medicine and civil engineering at the University of Cape Town.

Announcing the award, committee director Tom Clarke said the committee had 34 matrics who wrote their final exams in 2013, and Nkosi was the cream of the crop with nine distinctions. Nkosi and Maraxaba attended Sekolo sa Borokgo, with Maraxaba obtaining three distinctions.

Clarke said the pupils were selected for the scholarships way back in 2008 when they were in Grade 7 in primary schools in Alexandra.

“We would like to congratulate all our matrics of 2013 who excelled in their final examinations,” said Clarke, who announced a 97 percent pass rate with 94 percent of pupils achieving university entrance.

He said 41 distinctions were attained in subjects ranging from mathematics to life sciences.

“This is an excellent result achieved through hard work by our class of 2013 at school, during extra lessons on Saturdays and during the school holidays. Well done to them all.”

Clarke also singled out Lesedi Ratshefola from Sacred Heart College in Observatory, who achieved four distinctions.

Other achievers included Letlhabile Mukwevho from Sekolo sa Borokgo with four distinctions, Justin Badimo from the same school with three distinctions, Dineo Nono from Waverley Girls’ High School with three distinctions, and Florence Piyasi, also from Waverley Girls’ High School, with three distinctions.
