The Alex U13 soccer team clinched third spot in the VW U13 Junior Masters Tournament at the University of Johannesburg Soweto Campus from 9 to 12 January.
The team played six games of which they won three, drew two and lost one. “We finished number three in the overall standings of the tournament,” said team coach Mxolisi Mngomezulu, who is also the technical director of the Alexandra Northrand Football Association.
“The boys played exceptionally well and that is attributed to the support we got from the parents and our local football association in terms of preparations,” Mngomezulu added. He was assisted by Mahlomoleng Mohlaka, one of the youngest coaches in the Alex football fraternity.
Mngomezulu described the tournament as “a great spectacle for the future development of our players and a true reflection of pure talent Alexandra poses and the country at large, considering the teams came from various parts of South Africa.”
Mngomezulu paid tribute to VW Bruma which was their main sponsor and singled out sales manager Shane Naidu whom he said was selfless with his time and resources. “On behalf of the Alex football family we say ‘Viva VW Bruma Viva’,” Mngomezulu said.
The Alex team playing as VW Bruma played against VW Menlyn and won 4-0. The team then lost 1-0 to VW Middleburg, but won 1-0 against VW Strydompark. The team went on to draw 1-1 with VW Durban and VW Centurion, before wrapping up with a 1-0 victory over VW Maritzburg.
