Cinderella’s timeless tale

JOBURG - Timeless Cindrella is currently fascinating both young and old audiences at the People's Theatre in the Joburg Theatre Complex.

The fairytale Cinderella has been revitalised with a modern message that will delight young theatre audiences this festive season. Directors Jill Girard and Keith Smith have done it again. The talented duo has taken the story of Cinderella and worked their own magic on it, turning it into an interactive theatrical piece with a positive message, which will enchant children of all ages.

Girard and Smith’s focus has always been to transform classic children’s stories into dynamic shows. “Our greatest wish is to create theatre which is exciting. So even though our young audiences know the stories well, we ensure that there are always little twists to keep them on the edge of their seats,” said Girard.

They take this a step further by reworking timeless Disney films as they believe that today’s children respond immediately to the magic of movies. The team also taps into the inherent message that comes from the story and highlight this in a meaningful way for their young audiences to learn from. “In Cinderella we focus on the message that anyone can overcome adversity with a little help and support from friends,” Smith said.

“In this day and age, children deal with so many challenges and the tale of Cinderella relates to this. The main character is fundamentally a kind girl who is being bullied by her step-sisters. By accepting help when it’s offered to her, she comes out tops in the end,” said Smith.

Cinderella will run until Christmas Eve at the People’s Theatre at the Joburg Theatre Complex.
