Local dancer aims for the world stage

ALEXANDRA - A new dancing sensation has been born in Alex and hopes to conquer the world stage.

At just 21, Daddy Raphela has already shared the staged with some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry.

The dancer and choreographer performed at the 2010 Soccer World Cup opening ceremony where he danced alongside international artists R Kelly and Shakira. He has also worked with top South African choreographer Somizi Mhlongo.

“I was given a chance and have had an exciting and amazing experience,” Raphela said.

Originally from Thabagone Village in Limpopo, he moved to Johannesburg in 2004 to pursue his love of dance.

“I’ve always loved dancing but there were no dancing groups where I lived. I came to Johannesburg and started dancing at school and sometimes on the streets.”

He then joined a dancing school headed by Veli Mavuso and believes that that is where his talent was honed. After performing in various groups Raphela decided to go solo. He is now a freelance dancer and said it is sometimes better to do your own thing. Although he’s on his own, Raphela strongly believes in having a mentor and for him Veli Mavuso is the go-to person for advice.

“He’s taught me everything I know about dancing. When I first started I only knew one style of dance but now I know different types,” Raphela said.

He is currently studying retail tourism at Jeppe College and said he would like to take his dancing to the international stage when he’s finished his studies. “When I’m done with my diploma I want to tour the world. I want to be the dance ambassador for South Africa.” He added that he has the full support of his mother who is proud of what he has achieved.
