Kasi Movie Nights comes to Alex

ALEXANDRA - Popular Kasi Movie Nights are back in town - courtesy of Kasi Distribution.

Alexandra residents were in for a treat as the cinema was brought to them.

The experience, which was organised by Kasi Distribution, saw movie lovers enjoying a screening of the movie Felix at the Alexandra Stadium. The movie is about 14-year-old Felix Xaba who dreams of becoming a saxophonist like his late father.

Speaking about Kasi Movie Nights, co-founder of Kasi Distribution Bongumusa Zungu said, “It is about bringing cinema to the people. We are bridging that gap by bringing movies to emakasi. We want to bring back the culture of cinema and want families to understand and enjoy the experience.”

Kasi Movie Nights was first launched at the Soweto Amphitheatre last year and has grown since. About 90 people turned up for the movie which cost R20 per ticket. “The turnout was good considering that we had less than a week to promote the event,” said Zunga. “The audience responded well and they enjoyed the movie because it was something different. They loved it.”

He said people in townships needed such things because it helped to keep young people out of trouble. “We do not just show any movies. We show local and African content which people can relate to.”

Actor Thapelo Mokoena, who appears in the movie Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, was the host for the evening. There was also entertainment provided by local DJs. The next Kasi Movie Night will be held in December.
