Alex fun walk for health

ALEXANDRA - The City of Johannesburg's Region E will organise a campaign to educate senior citizens about the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and eating healthy foods.

Healthy life styles, good eating habits and regular exercise play an important role in combating many lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.

This according to Velisha Thompson of the City of Johannesburg’s Region E health and social development department. The department is organising a healthy lifestyle fun walk on 25 October in conjunction with the 4th Avenue Clinic.

Thompson believes many chronic illnesses can be prevented and managed by maintaining good health, not smoking and managing stress. “Communities are generally uninformed and not equipped with adequate knowledge to manage chronic diseases. Poor management of diseases results in patients complicating their conditions further,” she said.

The healthy lifestyle awareness campaign which will include a 3km and 5km fun walk at Altrek Stadium, starts at 8am.

“We find that many people lead sedentary lives which actually worsen their conditions such as diabetes, asthma, and hypertension. The fun walk will be an endeavour to encourage exercise, not just for the day but in future as well,” Thompson said.
