More than 150 pupils at Dr Knak Primary School were taught entrepreneurship and financial fitness skills during the Nedbank 4Me Market Day.
The programme targeted mainly Grade 7 pupils. The school was also given an education kit which will enable teachers to teach pupils how to start their own businesses and also manage their own money.
To ensure maximum participation and excitement, the programme was designed to be taught in a fun and exciting way so that children did not easily lose interest and become bored, said Dharmesh Bhana, head of Nedbank’s youth segment.
Bhana said the programme was a national project which would involve 300 schools.
Pupils, Sibusiso Kabe and Moleboge Maruatona said they had learnt how to be savvy with their money and avoid being cheated by crooks.
“We were also taught the importance of savings. If we want to buy something big, they taught us how to save the money and until you have put aside enough to buy the item,” Kabe said.
Mpho Moholo, a Grade 7 pupil said she was seriously considering starting her own small business of selling apples, sweets, chips and ice cream over the weekend and after school.
“I will also encourage my friends to start their own businesses too so we can club together and raise money for our farewell function at the school in November,” she said.
