Stamp exhibition at Museum Africa

JOBURG - Stamp collectors can flock to the Museum Africa in Newtown, Johannesburg, for the National Stamp Exhibition from 9 to 13 October.

The National Stamp Exhibition will be held at Museum Africa in Johannesburg from 9 to 13 October.

The opening of the exhibition will coincide with World Post Day, and the Post Office will issue a special round stamp to mark the occasion.

The event will be hosted by the Philatelic Society of Johannesburg under the auspices of the Philatelic Federation of South Africa. More than 7 500

album pages with stamps and postal material will be on display.

On exhibit for the first time will be the Curle Collection of Transvaal Postage Stamps which includes a rare pair of stamps with one printed upside down. Also on display will be the Harvey Pirie Collection SA and World War II. These showcase envelopes testifying to wartime events such as military postmarks and letters from prisoners of war.

One private collection shows the South African border war, including mail from South Africans held prisoner of war in Angola. There is a rare stamp that reads, “Destroy after reading”.

There will also be interesting items loaned from the Post Office Museum on display. The SA Post Office, Namibia Post and other Southern African postal administrations will be in attendance, and special exhibition postmarks will be available at the Post Office counter so that visitors can make their own souvenir envelopes and post letters from the museum.

A number of auction houses and dealers will be on hand for the serious collectors, including internationally renowned Spink and Stanley Gibbons Ltd. A stamp and coin auction by Stephan Welz & Co will also be hosted.
