Day care celebrates heritage

ALEXANDRA - DAY care celebrates Heritage Month while educating children about the diversity of African culture.

The diversity of African culture was apparent when daycare facility in Alexandra, Grace Early Learning Centre, held a cultural day.

The traditional fair was held to celebrate Heritage Month and to teach the children about each other’s cultures. The centre’s founder and principal, Maria Zwane said, “The children’s backgrounds vary from Zulu, Xhosa, Tsonga and Venda. We don’t want them to be oblivious to each other’s traditions.”

The centre worked together with parents to make the celebration possible. “Some parents brought mopani worms to school to show the diversity of our food,” said Zwane. “We as elders have to live our legacy and teach our children of their heritage.”
