Boxing hits Alexandra again

ALEXANDRA - Boxing was a big sport in Alexandra and was now being revived to keep the youth off the streets.

Boxing was one of the most popular sports in Alexandra, and it’s coming back with a bang.

The second tournament to promote the revival of boxing took place at the OR Tambo Centre on 14 September, with boxing matches from both seniors and juniors.

Former champions who competed included Bushy Mabele, Esso Dikobe, Stephen Msimanga, and Jeff Ngwenya. Chairperson of Jersey Joe, an Alexandra boxing club, said they wanted to bring back boxing. “Boxing was big back in the day, we either played soccer or we did boxing,” he said.

Jeff Ngwenya of the Soweto Boxing Organisation said they were doing their best to revive boxing in Alexandra. He said, “We wish more officials could attend more meetings.” The first revival tournament took place in July.

Training manager Bushy Mabele reminded boxers that they have to be registered in order to fight in tournaments. He added, “I have a lot of boxers and only four can compete because they are not registered.” The tournament had boxers from Alexandra, Soweto and Sebokeng. Organiser Mbulelo Transvaal thanked all the sponsors for their contribution.
