Alex pupil sparkles at Jewish board’s 110 years

ALEXANDRA - Eastbank High School pupil Nonhlanhla Mchunu has made Alexandra proud with her poetic prowess.

An Eastbank High School pupil sparkled at the South African Jewish Board of Deputies ceremony to mark its 110 years of existence.

Nonhlanhla Mchunu, a Grade 10 pupil, was called to the podium to render her poem entitled, Alex My Home – Alex My Roots. The audience included African Union chairperson Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Deputy Minister in the Presidency Obed Bapela and his wife, Speaker of the City of Johannesburg Connie Bapela, and various other leading political figures and business leaders.

A confident Mchunu offered more than was expected of her and won the hearts of many who could not stop applauding when she was done. The programme director described her as “amazingly talented” and urged the powers that be to nurture this talent and ensure it blossoms into the future.

Mchunu became an instant celebrity and the who’s who of government, politics, business and social life wanted to have their picture taken with this soft spoken and diminutive 12th Avenue resident. “I will savour and cherish this moment for a very long time to come,” she said.
