Sanitary requirements for Pholosho girls

ALEXANDRA - Thusong Youth Centre is making every day a Mandela Day.

The Youth Centre in association with The Nelson Mandela Foundation donated sanitary equipment, food and school bags to about 1 500 children of Alexandra in celebration of Mandela’s birthday.

“We as Thusong Youth Centre have been donating to various schools including Pholosho Secondary. Some of the students from the school come to the centre and we are aware of the their lack of basic needs and their poor background,” said Thusong director Beauty More.

The centre provides a number of activities including baking and acting, and there is also a clinic. Formed in 1979 the centre has helped many Alexandra and other township residents. As director, More is highly respected by the members of the community.

Life orientation teacher, Florina Hlongwane of the school said, “Thusong has been doing a very good job of helping those in need and we as a community cannot thank them enough,” she said.

“Not long ago they donated bags to the children in the township and today here they are again with sanitary equipment for the girls.” The centre continues to be of service to the Alexandra community and with more funding it could provide even better assistance to residents.
