Appeal to support children’s home

FAIRVALE - Concerned residents celebrated the life of Nelson Mandela by attending a fundraising event at the Impilo Child Protection and Adoption Services.

Ward 72 councillor Steven Kruger was among guests who arrived early at the children’s home and donated nappies, money, clothes, washing powder and baby formula.

Kruger said, “I am here to support one of the good causes in our community. People need to support the excellent work that Impilo does for needy children. I am happy for this event, it’s well organised and well attended. It’s even bigger than last year.”

The day was filled with different activities such as a jumping castle, face paintings, music and food stalls.

Director of Impilo, Sue Krawitz said, “I appreciate the nappies and other things the community provided, but we still need more as this event is also part of our fundraising.” Krawitz said about 2 000 children were abandoned annually.

The home is a temporary facility which houses 12 children. Krawitz said their intention was not to keep children for the long term. “If the parents are found, the NPO works with the family to find a solution.

We have care workers who look after the children physically, emotionally and medically, and give the children all the help they require.”
The home also works as an adoption service. Impilo Child Protection and Adoption Services is in 20 Leigh Avenue, Fairvale.
