Alex police and thugs in shootout

ALEXANDRA - Alex police and thugs suspected to be driving a stolen car were involved in a shootout at 12pm outside the Sankopano Centre in 12th Avenue.

Alexandra police spokesperson Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela has confirmed a shooting incident outside the Sankopano Centre in 12th Avenue.

Maphakela said Alex police had been tailing a suspected stolen car when two occupants of the white Toyota Tazz opened fire on them after being flagged down to stop.

Police returned fire and wounded one of the suspects. Maphakela said the suspect, who was shot from the back, was arrested and rushed to hospital under police guard. His accomplice was arrested and their car crashed onto an oncoming vehicle.

Maphakela said the car had been reportedly hijacked in the Sandringham area and the Alex police had spotted it and then tailed it.

No one else was injured in the shootout, including the police and driver of the vehicle that collided with the suspects’ car.

BREAKING NEWS: 2 July 2013 12pm

One of the suspects were arrested while the other fled on foot after abandoning the car. Police recovered the car.

Unconfirmed eyewitness reports said no one was injured in the shootout but other sources said two school children were injured.

Police are said to have been tailing the white corolla when the shooting broke out. It is not clear who started firing.
