Budding author hopes her book will help others

ALEXANDRA – A woman from a failed relationship finds her inner strength and helps others.

A relationship that went sour made budding author, Koena Selemela, realise that she, alone, is her saviour from a future of misery.

Selemela, revealed this to Alex News, recalling when her life almost fell into the doldrums after she was exposed to her vulnerability in a love relationship.

She claimed to have been so reliant on her ‘better’ half and always ready to please others in return for affirmation on everything about her. When the relationship ended, she realised that some – even from her own family – rejoiced at the demise, with others gleefully enjoying her fragility in a world where she has learnt that trust is never a given in a love relationship.

“Only love yourself and don’t trust anyone,” Selemela mused when she revealed the purpose of expressing her ordinary but thorny life’s journey in the book, Koena’s Healing Poems.

“I hope my [autobiography] will help others to realise and deal with their fragility in order to proceed with their lives.”

She said that she now instils in her children messages that encourage inner strength, will, commitment and assertiveness; and setting and achieving goals despite any blocks by peers, loved ones, in the community and at home.

“A loved one can’t abuse you if you are self-aware and neither can you make them stay if they don’t truly love you. So better be ready to love yourself first in order to retain self-love when an erstwhile loved one stops loving you. With self-love, one has the defence against emotional to physical abuse, which often leads to the victim being injured and others losing their lives trying to hold on to love that has ended. This, from fear of venturing into life alone.”

When she was on the verge of ruin, her inner strength grew and further revealed her potential, which she has now put into words. Her book, containing narrations, poems and prose are her life-story. It highlights life’s daily challenges which many of us tend to sweep under the carpet, hoping they will disappear. She said they never will disappear without putting in the effort to end them.
