Soft drink delivery truck hijacked in Alex

ALEXANDRA — Two armed men force crew to drive off and later remove a safe from the company vehicle.

Alex police are investigating an incident in which a truck was hijacked at noon on 14 January at a tuck shop near the Madala hostel.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Allie Kodisang said two armed men approached a three-man crew delivering cooldrinks in a Nissan truck and demanded money and a cellphone from the driver, who gave them R270 in cash and his work cellphone. One of the suspects tried to remove the money safe from the truck but failed.

They bundled the crew into the truck and threatened to kill the shop owner if he reported them. The suspects forced the truck driver to drive towards the N3 highway and onto the N12 towards OR Tambo Airport, before ordering him to stop on the roadside. They eventually removed the safe which they covered with a jacket as they strolled leisurely along the freeway in the opposite direction after ordering the crew to drive off.
