Woman accuses brother of theft

ALEXANDRA – A brother allegedly sold his sister's belongings while she was on holiday in KZN.

A man who allegedly sold his sister’s belongings while she was away in KwaZulu-Natal during the festive season, was remanded in custody by the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court pending his bail application.

The victim visited KwaZulu-Natal on 16 December and asked that the accused and another relative look after the house while she was away. On 23 December, the accused was left alone in the house after the relative with whom he had been asked to look after the house also went to KwaZulu-Natal.

A neighbour phoned the victim on Christmas day, alerting her to a break-in and theft from her locked room. The accused allegedly stole clothes, sandals, a DVD player, a carpet and extension cords. She laid a charge of housebreaking and robbery on 7 January, leading to her brother’s arrest.

The accused has claimed that he sold the items for money to buy food. He said he would give the person who bought the DVD his R150 back and recover the other items, and that he sold the carpet because he thought it was no longer needed as it was lying around outside her room.

The case continues.
