KwaBhekilanga Secondary School’s four-year record as having the best performing matriculants in Alex went a step further with its top matric achieving the best average percentage pass mark in the township.
Shiluke Mswanganye (17) achieved a clean sweep of distinctions in all seven subjects she wrote, with an average pass of 90.5 per cent. She managed 97 per cent in economics, 91 per cent in mathematics, 96 per cent in accounting, 86 per cent in life orientation, 84 per cent in English, and 90 per cent in Xitshonga language and business studies. She will be studying accounting at the University of Joburg.
Shiluke attributed her good performance to personal strength and abilities she said were present in every other child if they committed and gave their all to their studies. She never wanted to settle for mediocracy or use any failure as motivation and she keeps away from negative distractions.
She also attributed her success to her simple and humble home, with grandparents and parents who supported her and relieved her of household chores whenever she sat down to study. She praised her teachers – often derided in townships as incapable of producing good results – and thanked voluntary tutors and fellow pupils with positive minds and attitudes towards education, for their support.
She urged others to turn their negative circumstances into motivation and to always ask for help from the teachers and many willing volunteers. “No one will shun giving positive help to a child with a desire for more knowledge,” Shiluke said.
She extended her gratitude to St Mary’s Secondary School for the weekend tutorials, the education department’s Secondary School Improvement Programme and the Sizanani mentors, in particular, Aurelia Huber.
She wants to become a chartered accountant and later, a forensic accountant. “I like investigating financial issues to help end fraud, money laundering and endemic corruption in companies and government, which deprive the nation of essential development resources. I want to be part of the Public Protector’s team to expose, recover stolen resources and ensure they are used profitably, and that the country rids itself of corrupt officials.”
