Joburg Theatre employees to face the music

JOBURG – Eight foreign nationals have been fingered in a report as having wiggled their way into the City's catering department using fake and expired permits.

Joburg mayor Herman Mashaba has received the final report detailing fraud and misconduct by eight Joburg Theatre employees.

He said the report stemmed from an investigation into a number of questionable asylum and special work permits obtained by foreign nationals who work for the Joburg Theatre’s catering and hospitality departments.

A Nexus Forensic Services investigation had revealed that asylum permits belonging to six of the implicated employees were fraudulent. The other two permits had expired in June last year. Mashaba said those who were implicated faced disciplinary action by the City.

His spokesperson, Gabu Tugwana, said the matter was reported to the Hillbrow Police Station and the Hawks. “The City’s human resources department has started a drive to strengthen its recruitment processes, which will place more emphasis on security vetting of its candidate employees and set up an anti-fraud, corruption and nepotism campaign. These steps will create a good environment for stimulating investment and job creation that ensure fast-tracking service delivery,” said Tugwana.

He said it was every citizen’s duty to prevent fraud and corruption by reporting the culprits directly to the mayor’s office.

Mashaba said, “This recent report [bolsters] my conviction [for] conducting a skills audit [of] employees within the City while strengthening our efforts to [clamp down on] fraud and corruption without fear or favour where it had previously been allowed to flourish in the dark corners of the City.

“I am determined to ensure that corruption and wrongdoing in the City are exposed, that those found guilty of wrongdoing face the full might of the law and that funds lost by the City through corruption are reclaimed for the benefit of our people.”
